The Improvised Shakespeare Company

An excellent example of long-form improvisation, as the troupe takes one audience suggestion and devises a two-act play (in Shakespearean-style, as the company name would suggest) on the spot. An extremely difficult task, but the troupe makes it feel effortless. When I attempted a  similar, shorter form exercise for a class, I wasn’t very successful – basically just inserting the word “doth” whenever I could, even if it made no sense.  I’ve only seen one show from them thus far, but so far it’s the best improv performance I’ve seen of any company. The piece was extremely funny and the cast obviously knows their Shakespeare. In talking with someone who previously performed with the troupe, they regularly meet to dissect a Shakespeare play, often meeting with a literature professor to better understand the text. The extra effort pays obvious dividends when you see them perform on stage. The group regularly performs at the iO theater space.
